Claiming an Education: a reading discussion led by Chelsie Joy Valerio and Nicole Meldahl

To claim an education is to take hold of your own learning and pursue intellectual freedom. When we view education as a tool for agency, creativity, and freedom—rather than something to consume—we embark on an intellectual adventure. It's hard work that demands clear thinking, active discussion, and excellent writing. It also demands that we step outside the bubble of our own experiences, that we listen closely and wrestle seriously with different perspectives.

For this discussion, we'll use Adrienne Rich's Claiming an Education as a starting point to reflect on the distinction between receiving and claiming an education, and to consider how we take responsibility for our own learning and intellectual freedom.

Reading discussion led by Chelsie Joy Valerio and Nicole Meldahl.

Chelsie Joy Valerio is a young photographer and Problem Children alum. Nicole Meldahl is a local historian and Executive Director of Western Neighborhoods Project.

What are your tools?: A show & tell led by Sofia and Tamara

Bring your tool of choice for creation, adventure, and confrontation of the unknown. We will each share the objects in our lives that expand our reach and help us shape the world around us

What does this tool make possible? What are its limits? When do you pick it up, and when do you put it down?

At the end of the show-and-tell, we will take individualized portraits of each person with their tool using a scanner camera obscura specially built for the event.

to: A new perfume concept by Toto Honniball

Through an exploration of art, science, and gratitude, Toto Honniball has crafted a perfume brand that honors memory and the intimacy of human connection.

In this culminating presentation, Toto will share their creative process—how they approached fragrance as both material and metaphor, and how scent can shape the way we remember, relate, and connect.

Titled to:, the brand draws its name from the beginning of a letter: an open invitation, a directional prompt, a way of making meaning between self and other. The brand conceives fragrance as a gift to: moments, to: friends, and to: the ordinary wonders of life.

The brand concept is the culmination of Toto's work in Problem Children Winter—an advanced program that supports ambitious young creatives as they develop original projects at the intersection of art, thought, and experimentation.

The Habit of Adventure: A reflection on springtime with Daniel Lucas

Throughout the spring, Problem Library has hosted gatherings, led programs, and launched new projects around a single guiding theme: The Habit of Adventure.

A seemingly contradictory phrase, it has challenged us to take risks in how we work, experiment with new formats, and stay open to surprise and serendipity. From scent compositions to thought-provoking presentations and a monthly cycle of Saturday activities and encounters, the theme has helped us live in and work with the unfolding nature of creative and educational work.

With Too Much Information marking the end of this season, Daniel will reflect on how the theme has shaped our choices and what this season has taught us. He'll also offer a glimpse of what's to come, including our next seasonal theme: Creative Gifts.

Part presentation, part open conversation—we invite you to share your reflections on the season, the theme, and what adventure has meant to you.
